My Story
You know, they say you truly understand the depth of your love for something when it's taken away from you. Coffee was my love, and I learned that lesson the hard way. Back in October 2020, life threw me a curveball when I was diagnosed with an advanced, non-surgical brain tumor in my brainstem. It was a tough journey from that point on.
Almost immediately, I found myself in the midst of a month filled with daily chemotherapy and radiation sessions. It was grueling, to say the least. One of the many consequences of this battle was the loss of my ability to safely swallow, which led to the introduction of a feeding tube. For months, my sustenance came from a less-than-appetizing slurry in a bottle, while I watched ads for things I could no longer savor.
But let me tell you, with the spirit of a true foodie, I fought tirelessly to regain my ability to enjoy real food. I faced setbacks and failures along the way, but my determination never wavered. Unfortunately, even after the feeding tube was removed, I still couldn't indulge in my beloved coffee due to persistent reflux issues. It took nearly a year before I could finally savor that comforting cup of joe again.
During that coffee-free period, my affection for coffee transformed into a deep exploration of the world I had missed. I delved into the realm of specialty coffee beans, learned about oxidation, and the intricate processes of growing and roasting beans to minimize acidity. As my health improved, I had the chance to reintroduce myself to my long-lost friend – coffee. It was during this journey that I had an idea, a desire to share the knowledge I had gained, not just about great coffee but also as a way to give back to a cause that had become all too familiar to me.
